Virdon and Burke’s new career as horse thieves comes to an abrupt and ingnominious end, when they are caught in the act—complete with backpacks—by Barlow, the Chimpanzee Prefect of the village of Kaymak. Galen—who has cultivated the Simian administrator’s friendship in an attempt to retrieve Virdon’s lost Flight Disc—looks on helplessly as the astronauts are led away. He is en route to a hut the representative of ape authority has set aside for him—and is taking his backpack with him.
