EXT. GARRISON - FULL SHOT - NIGHT

to ESTABLISH

ANGLE ON GALEN

approaching, his nose buried in a sheaf of “official” looking papers, MUMBLING to himself, CAMERA PULLING BACK TO INCLUDE two GUARDS on duty by an entrance. Galen pauses and observes them as the o.s. CREAK OF A WAGON IS HEARD.

GALEN  Is that all you do? Just stand here all night?

GUARD  (nonplussed)  We’re on guard duty, sir.

GALEN  Two guards? For one door?  (makes notation)  Hmph! Unnecessary expenditure!  (turns)  What’s that?

ANGLE INCLUDING WAGON (CART)

being pulled by Virdon and Burke, shawl type hoods over their heads. The two parts of the glider are folded and covered on the bed of the cart. They stop close by and the Guard moves to them.

GUARD  Don’t you know it’s past curfew? What do you want?

VIRDON  (humbly)  We have supplies…ordered by Minister Carsius.

Galen moves forward quickly, indicating his papers.

GALEN  Ah! I was wondering about that! This item right here.

He flits the paper past the confused Guard, turns to Virdon.

GALEN  What are they for?

VIRDON  I…I don’t know. They’re to be delivered to a human…Leuric? He’s working here someplace?

GUARD  The one in the workshop…

GALEN  Well? Go fetch Carsius and get him down here.

GUARD  But…he left orders not to be disturbed.

GALEN  Oh? Well, if you know where these things go, then take them.

GUARD  I can’t leave my post.

GALEN  There’re two of you, aren’t there? Oh, good heavens! I’ll help you myself! Come, come, come!

He stuffs his papers in his belt, moves to the cart bed and hefts up one bundle. The Guard hesitates, more confused, then gives in. Galen hands him the bundle and picks up the other as the Guard moves through the door, casting a helpless look at the other Guard.

ANGLE FAVORING GALEN, VIRDON AND BURKE

the latter two supressing smiles.

GALEN  Begone! Before I report you for breaking curfew!  (turns, turns back)  Hmph. Humans!

With his nose in the air, he exits, leaving Virdon and Burke to stare after him open-mouthed.

INT. WORKSHOP - CLOSE SHOT - LEURIC - NIGHT

tired and weary, working on his primtive glider, attempting to pull a hide taut across a section of framework, tying it down. The thong breaks and he breaks with it, giving up dejectedly, CAMERA PULLING BACK TO REVEAL his partially finished glider, a “Model T” compared to the one built by Virdon and Burke. Leuric rubs his eyes, then tries again, holding up as the door is HEARD TO OPEN.

GUARD’S VOICE  (o.s.)  In here.

ANGLE INCLUDING THE GUARD

ENTERING the room, followed by Galen. Leuric reacts but Galen quickly indicates for him to be quiet. The Guard sets down his bundle, turns, takes Galen’s and sets it down also. Galen stares about the room in false astonishment.

GALEN  What is all this?

GUARD  This human is supposed to be…

GALEN  (cuts him off)  That’s all. Get back to your post.

GUARD  But…you asked…

GALEN  To…your…post! What if the Officer of the Guard came by? Hmmm?

The Guard reacts open-mouthed, stammers, then quickly EXITS. Galen shuts the door behind him, then turns to Leuric, pulling the papers from his belt.

CLOSER ANGLE - GALEN AND LEURIC

LEURIC  Galen! You shouldn’t be here!

GALEN  Don’t I know it.

He riffles through the papers, pulling out a centerfold, handing it to Leuric.

GALEN  Alan and Pete have built you a glider…  (indicates bundles)  …And these are the plans. Carsius will never know the difference.

At the mention of Carsius’ name, Leuric winces, putting his finger to his lips, indicating another door.

LEURIC  His quarters are right next door.

GALEN  Oh?  (reacts)  It’s past my bedtime!

He quickly moves to the door, looking back.

GALEN  It’s really very simple. All you have to do is put it together. Good luck.

He EXITS.

MED. CLOSE ON LEURIC

looking after him, about to call out, thinking better of it, then slowly looking at the plans, turning the paper this way, then that, his brow furrowing curiously.

INT. GARRISON CORRIDOR - ANGLE ON GALEN - NIGHT

approaching cautiously, glancing about, suddenly holding up for:

CARSIUS’ VOICE  (o.s.)  How many do you have?

KONAG’S VOICE  (o.s.)  Several hundred, sir…and I understand many more are stored in the armory at Central City.

Galen eases forward curiously, reaching a corner, peering around it.

GALEN’S P.O.V. - DOWN SHORT CORRIDOR

to a partially open door over which a sign proclaims: WEAPONS ARSENAL - KEEP OUT. Carsius can be seen inside talking to Konag who is wiping off an object with a cloth.

CARSIUS  Then we have more than enough…

BACK TO GALEN

listening, reacting to:

KONAG’S VOICE  (o.s.)  Yes indeed, sir, and if we learn to fly…and with these weapons, we’ll have total control over the humans for all time to come. It’s a splendid idea…

GALEN’S P.O.V.

CARSIUS  Yes…I though it was rather unique myself. Well, we’ll know in a few days. Good night, Konag.

KONAG  Good night, sir.

Carsius turns for the door.

BACK TO GALEN

ducking back, pressing against the wall as Carsius’ footsteps are HEARD approaching. He APPEARS, hesitates momentarily, then turns down the corridor away from Galen who slowly lets out his breath as Carsius DISAPPEARS. After a moment, he peers around the corner again.

GALEN’S P.O.V. - TO ARSENAL

Konag is seen to move o.s. in the room.

BACK TO GALEN

as he cautiously moves around the corner, tiptoeing to the arsenal door.

CLOSE ON GALEN

reaching the door, cautiously peering in, reacting curiously.

REVERSE ANGLE

CAMERA ZOOMS IN ON a faded green box bearing the legend: U.S. ARMY. The box is open, revealing rows of hand grenades packed in cosmoline.

CUT TO:
(OR FADE OUT)

INT. HUT - CLOSE ON BURKE’S HANDS - NIGHT

wiping off a grenade with a cloth, CAMERA PULLING BACK TO INCLUDE Burke with Virdon and Galen looking on.

BURKE  This grease is called cosmoline. It’s what kept them from deteriorating over the centuries.

VIRDON  You think it’s still alive?

Burke tosses it to him.

BURKE  You want to try it and find out?

VIRDON  No, thanks.

GALEN  What’s it do?

VIRDON  It’s called a grenade…  (indicates)  You pull this pin, throw it…that releases the clip and arms the charge…then duck. It goes off like twenty rifles…

BURKE  In all directions.

GALEN  Hmmm. No wonder your humans destroyed themselves.

BURKE  Oh, they went on to bigger and better things first.  (beat)  How’d you get it anyhow?

GALEN  Konag was delighted to give it to me.  (beat)  I think now I know why.

Virdon and Burke exchange wry glances, then become serious.

VIRDON  Maybe we’ll just have to give it back to him.  (beat)  You realise what we’ve done, of course?

ANOTHER ANGLE

Virdon holds up the grenade and all stare at it.

BURKE  Yeah…An Ape in a hang glider could carry a dozen or more…

GALEN  And that would be the end of Leuric’s dream…humans and Apes…living in harmony. Oh, dear…

VIRDON  (to Burke)  So instead of trying to save one man’s life, we’ve jeopardised what’s left of the entire human race!

He slaps a fist and paces.

GALEN  Alan, don’t be angry with yourself. You didn’t know…

BURKE  He’s right. There’s gotta be an answer.

VIRDON  (faces them)  Sure there’s an answer! A real simple one! All we have to do is get Leuric out of there and destroy that nice, pretty glider we made for him…without all of us getting killed!

As they exchange knowing glances,
