The events of “The Horse Race” begin with the fugitives already in residence at the home of the Blacksmith, Martin, and his son, Gregar. The story opens in Martin’s forge, and the backpacks are nowhere to be seen—which is what you would expect. Unless the fugitives were sleeping in the Blacksmith’s place of work, you would more reasonably expect their bags and baggage to be found in the house itself…
